If you are reading this post, you’re probably in the market for new or used pallet racking. Even if you are just beginning your search, you have probably realized that there many racking and accessory options. You’ve also probably realized that buying used material is an option as well. There are many things to consider when deciding between new and used racking that you probably don’t realize. At the surface level, used will be cheaper. However, there is much more to consider besides cost.

What is my pallet racking budget?

The fact that you are considering used pallet racking is an indication that your overall budget is a consideration…and let’s be honest, it’s ALWAYS a consideration for just about any business-related purchase. With our used options, you may be able to find savings of 30% or more. If cost is king, used options are probably for you. But there are certain things you are giving up at the cost of, well, the cost.

What can I store?

Let’s assume you are starting your storage layout process from scratch. This is the first piece of information you will need to provide. All racking possesses a certain amount of capacity and we will need to know what requirements are needed to safely store your product. After this question, you need to ask yourself several other questions about your products, including, but not limited to:

  • What are the dimensions of my products and/or pallets?
  • How much do my products/pallets weigh?
  • Are there environmental requirements for my material (example: food, medical supplies)
  • How regularly do my SKU’s move or turn over?

How much room do I have in my warehouse?

We get a lot of requests for full racking layouts of used material. While this can be a solution, if you’re laying out a larger warehouse, this might not be the best option for you. Used pallet racking moves quickly, and the quantities fluctuate often. We have found that used material is best for smaller applications, or adding on to existing racking. If you have your building’s dimensions (ceiling height, length, width) this will help guide your purchase as well.

When do I need it?

If you already know exactly WHAT you need and WHEN you need it, new material might be a better option. We stock a wide variety of new materials and can get out the door and on the way to you within 48 hours of your order. Visit our store to see what we can get to you in a matter of days!

Do I care about the appearance?

You can find used pallet racks in a variety of conditions. At Pallet Rack Now, we can say the same about our inventory. The answer to this question comes back to the first question about the budget. If you are ok with small blemishes or paint chips, used is a great discount option.

Do I care about the EXACT capacity of used pallet racking?

One question we often receive is centered around capacity and what weight a used system can hold. The best that we or other used distributors can give is estimation with no guarantees. That is because we don’t always know what the racking was storing, what it went through from a wear and tear standpoint, and what the racking was manufactured for. There are certainly questions inside of this question that need to be addressed. With new material, however, we can provide exact capacity numbers and a manufacturer warranty to back that product (warranty terms vary by manufacturer).
